Why jojoba oil is one of the best ingredients for balanced skin
Share
Jojoba Oil is such an important ingredient as it is very close to your skin’s own sebum that is produced by your sebaceous glands. When you were a child your skin produced plenty of this stuff and perhaps it still does? But if you’re like most people, as we get older our sebaceous glands can either get tired and not produce enough of it or through hormonal changes in your body (puberty, stress etc) you may end up producing too much.
Sebum acts as a protective film, helping shield against the elements that could come in the form of airborne pollutants, oxygen, cigarette smoke and others. Having this protective layer is like when people put plastic over your furniture to make sure that it doesn’t get stained or get damaged by anything that comes in contact with it. The only difference is tha
Jojoba oil and your skin barrier
Jojoba oil is such an important skincare ingredient because it is structurally very close to your skin's own sebum, which is produced by your sebaceous glands.
When you were younger, your skin likely produced an ideal amount of sebum. As we age however, sebaceous glands can either slow down and produce too little oil or, through hormonal changes such as stress or puberty, produce too much.
Both scenarios can lead to skin imbalance.
Why sebum matters
Sebum acts as a protective film on the surface of the skin.
This protective layer helps shield your skin from:
• Airborne pollutants
• Oxidative stress
• Cigarette smoke
• Environmental damage
Think of it as a breathable barrier that keeps moisture in and aggressors out. Unlike plastic covers on furniture, this barrier leaves your skin glowing, supple and healthy.
This is also why we gently challenge the idea that a moisturiser should "sink in".
If a moisturiser appears to disappear instantly, it has usually evaporated, not absorbed. Effective moisturisation leaves a fine protective film that supports the skin barrier.
How jojoba oil balances oily and acne prone skin
Jojoba oil works in a beautifully intelligent way.
• If your skin is producing too little oil, jojoba oil helps replenish what is missing
• If your skin is producing too much oil, jojoba oil is thought to signal that enough sebum is present, encouraging the skin to calm production
This balancing effect can be particularly helpful for breakouts.
Pimples often form when oil production accelerates but becomes trapped beneath the surface, creating congestion. Supporting balanced oil flow helps prevent this "traffic jam" within pores.
Skin benefits of jojoba oil
Beyond oil regulation, jojoba oil supports overall skin health by helping to:
• Improve skin elasticity
• Support barrier repair
• Protect against moisture loss
Jojoba oil naturally contains:
• Vitamin E
• B complex vitamins
• Silicon
• Chromium
• Copper
• Zinc
These nutrients help maintain resilient, calm and well nourished skin.
